We’ve all been there, bored in front of a computer and searching for some idle games to entertain us. There is almost too much to choose from out there now, with new game websites popping up daily – so we wanted to put together a comprehensive list of the most popular websites. Some of these are classics, having been around for over a decade and are still drawing in new players; pretty impressive!

Founded in 2002, BFG is great for hidden-object and strategy games in particular. You do have to create an account, which is free but the quality of their games is awesome and worth the occasional email. Well-known games from them include the huge Mystery Case Files series, and Life Quest. They also offer hour-long trials for all of their purchasable games, which is a great way to get some variety and try before you buy.

With over ten million unique players every month, AddictingGames is a go-to site for online gamers. They offer every category you can think of and have some real hits, such as The Impossible Quiz, Escape: the Office/Bathroom/Bedroom and loads of beloved stickman games. Launching games from as many independent developers as possible, they still put out over 10 games each week. We can’t keep up!

One of the newer sites, launched only in 2006 and acquired by GameStop in 2010. This site offers some great opportunities for developers to reach new audiences through GameStop and Facebook. Founded in 2000, PopCap has a stellar reputation for creating simple, addictive games such as Bejeweled, which sells one game every 4 seconds. A subsidiary of games giant EA, PopCap’s other big titles include Plants vs Zombies, Bookworm, Typer Shark! and Peggle Blast.

This site publishes some of the highest quality games available online, all free as the title suggests. They cover every genre from racing games, puzzle, action, MMO games to sports and shooting. Some of their best rated games include Sim Taxi, Dirt Bike series, Urban Sniper and Airport Madness.

Newgrounds is more than just games; it is a hub of entertainment including videos, movies and audio. They are also the grandpa of this list, founded in 1995.
